Windows Server 2016 1709 Update

Actually a good thing in my view. It means Windows Server 2016 is on the LTSB (now called LTSC) branch/channel, so is valid for 10 years.

Literally just finished upgrading all our servers to 2016. Urgh!

 

Just spotted 1709 is only supported for 18 months. Phew!

I am guessing because they are one 2 different tracks.

It's a bit like LTSB > LTSB upgrades, there is no direct upgrade path. I believe it would involve a fresh install.

Can I just ask a (what may be a completely stupid) question? If 1709 is only supported for 18 months why would you bother installing it? I'm just about to build a new server and thought I'd go with the latest, but if 1607 is supported as part of the LTSC and you get years of support what would be the point of going for 1709?

 

And slightly off topic, if 1709 is core only does that mean we should be looking to install Server core going forward?

It's not for people who build things manually, it's for completely automated mass systems.

It's a perfectly valid question and you're right, in the context of servers it makes no sense.

It works fine in my Server OSD Task Sequence in SCCM. So there is that.

Download Windows Server Standard or Windows Server Datacenter from VLSC. They will both download the same 1709 ISO.

I'd still only suggest installing it you need/want the features it offers. If you want long-term support, then of course the LTSB/C 1607 version would make more sense.

 

If you're configuring a Hyper-V host, then I would suggest LTSB 1607 and only virtual/separate physical instances of 1709.

i wonder if they will match it with w10 and call it windows server 10 to be "on brand"

It would make more sense, Windows Server 1709, but then technically it should be called Windows Server 2017. I'm sure they'll make their mind up at some point.
