clareq Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 I've just had to rebuild my workstation - a Windows 10 machine. Before the rebuild I had hyper-v running, and used it to prepare images. I've re-installed hyper-v and imported an image, but once I start the image it hangs on starting for as long as I'm happy letting it. I've tried removing the network card from the client, as I've read this can cause issues, and I've also tried creating a new client, both Gen 1 and gen 2, but get the same problem - a hanging machine. There is nothing in the event log, except the notifications when I force the client to close by stopping the vmwp.exe process. Any ideas?
denzal2k4 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Personally Id try making a new hyper-v guest and pointing it at your old hard drive, otherwise it may be a permissions thing?
clareq Posted October 13, 2017 Author Posted October 13, 2017 Personally Id try making a new hyper-v guest and pointing it at your old hard drive, otherwise it may be a permissions thing? Tried making a new guest, and have full control on the drive holding the virtual machine.
denzal2k4 Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 (edited) When you say import the image, did you actively Export on the previous build first, I seem to remember hyper-v machines can be really funny about not being exported and one of the permissions they need is the guid of the actual machine it was running on, it tripped me up ages ago and ended up having to rebuild the machine because I had no way of knowing the previous guid. Just read you have tried making 2 other clients (did this include trying to attach the same previous vhd?), I may be barking up completely the wrong tree... Edited October 13, 2017 by denzal2k4
clareq Posted October 13, 2017 Author Posted October 13, 2017 I've tried just about every permutation of imported machine and new machine, none start.
clareq Posted October 17, 2017 Author Posted October 17, 2017 OK, I can confirm that the security for the Hard drive includes permisison for the virtual machine, it still hangs.
Steve21 Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Is this hanging on startup or import? e.g. Is it just a blank screen with the hyperv bios thingy? Sometimes I find when a machine has shutdown badly, it can't show the "select here to restart" option etc on the hyperv console, yet if you hit enter etc it accepts it (as the "boot without restoring kinda option" and goes past it. clareq Posted October 17, 2017 Author Posted October 17, 2017 Hanging on startup - imported machine or new one. It doesn't get as far as the hyper-v bios
