Renfield-64 Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 I'm going to post this here as am not sure where else it belongs. On our school network if a user (ie; teacher) is logged onto a computer and has Chrome open and they then log onto another computer they cannot open Chrome again until they close it on the other computer. This is quite a well known issue I believe and though it took me a while to figure out we can live with it. The problem I now have is that I have one user who can't open Chrome even though she is sure she is not logged on anywhere else. Any ideas?
ZeroHour Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Yes we do. That will be the problem, since both copies are running from the same unc basically it will be locking files on PC A and PC B will see the same files as locked. Check the broken users appdata for a file called "lockfile" which I suspect (not confirmed) is blocking chrome running for them now as it thinks its running still.
ChrisMiles Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 ZeroHour is correct, Google Chrome cannot run on more than one machine when the Chrome data folder is held on a shared location, it must be seperate for each instance. I've seen posts from the chromium people where they have outright refused to fix this issue and instead say to use the syncing capabilities of Chrome using a Google account.
Renfield-64 Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 I have seen the lock file but cannot delete it, is there a way around this? Thanks,
Arthur Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 (edited) is there a way around this? Don't redirect AppData or set Chrome's UserData directory to a local folder and sync this when they logoff/on. Edited September 28, 2017 by Arthur

ZeroHour Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Don't redirect AppData. Although that would solve it not redirecting appdata is a major limitation.
Renfield-64 Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 It won't let me rename , open or delete it as it says the file is being used by another program (which we know). The reason I redirect app data is because I have set a number of tabs to open by default they need this to happen wherever they log on.

I was meaning to delete the file for the user that had this problem: The problem I now have is that I have one user who can't open Chrome even though she is sure she is not logged on anywhere else Sadly cant think of an easy file for the masses though right now short of trying to get chrome to install in a different location in their profile so its copied down locally every time they log in.

Hi, yes it is only one person and that is the file I cannot delete.
ZeroHour Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 (edited) Hi, yes it is only one person and that is the file I cannot delete. Hmm it seems strange, there shouldn't be a file lock unless they are still logged in else where, maybe ask where they were last logged in and reboot that machine. Renfield-64 Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 I did always suspect this, the only other place they log in is from home through Cloud Access (a form of Remote Desktop) but I have asked her to make sure she actually logs out of it and not just closes the session. I will have another chat with her. Thanks for your advice folks.
ADMaster Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Look at the file server where app data is redirected and get opensmbsessions look for any with the users name to find out where it is open from. You can also just kill the session. If the only reason you redirect appdata is to open multiple tabs set this via group policy. We are also a GAFE school so I encourage staff to log into chrome so their settings are synced.
