Issues - Windows 7 to Windows 10 Roaming Profiles

One of our current projects is moving our PCs and Laptops from Windows 7 to Windows 10. As a college we have a lot of prep to do with this before we can go ahead, we are having a few issues with roaming profiles though. Here is what is happening:

 

- The current Windows 7 profiles will not work on Windows 10, users can either not login at all, or have major issues when they do login

 

- sometimes it says an error has occurred and it logs them out again.- Currently we have a standard 'base' Windows 7 roaming profile that is automatically given to new staff when they are created.

 

- In Windows 10, it doesn't appear to be as easy as just copying/pasting a profile from one user to another.

 

- If we ever see corrupt profiles we will usually back it up, and create a new Win7 profile from our 'base' profile for them by coping the 'base' into their profile directory and it works on Win7, but again does not seem to work with Win10.

 

Is there a way to create some sort of Win10 'base' profile that we can use for new staff. Is there any reason that our Win7 profiles are not working on Win10, how should the transition work, from what I have read it should be Profile.V2 for windows 7, and Profile.V6 for win10? Should this generate on a login to Windows 10 machine? Should it move the data across? Will it sync the data from V2 to V6 as they move between the Win7 and the Win10 machines?I hope this all makes sense, sorry for all the questions

As far as I'm aware there's no way of syncing settings between windows 7 profiles and win10 ones. The V2 and V6 profiles are completely different, and can't be easily converted one into another (if at all).

 

Your best bet is to let the user profiles generate "naturally" when the user logs on for the first time. After that, as long as you've got roaming profiles enabled, the new V6 profile should be saved back to the server and roam (mostly) as expected.

If the user is moving between windows 7 and 10 you should have both a V2 and V6 folder in the user profile folder on the server.

 

As to creating a "base profile", I'm not sure, it's not something we've ever tried, we always let windows create roaming profiles at login.

What is the login performance of Windows 10.. both first time and subsequent times using roaming? Does that app stuff keeps running every time when switching pcs?
