mbedford Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 (edited) We have implemented the DNS method of forcing all of our devices to use the strict or restricted mode for YouTube. I am led to believe that you can now setup a system to allow selected users to override this for specific videos. We are then using this method to allow specific videos https://support.google.com/a/answer/6208224 Problem is, it doesnt work!!! The teachers who are allowed to override videos do not ever get the blue bar appear on a video to override it. Any ideas? BTW, G Suite support were useless on this one, apparently YouTube is not there problem, I guess thats what you get from a free service. Edited July 25, 2017 by mbedford
mavhc Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Just seemed to work for me, however I found it almost useless, as way too many videos were allowed when not signed in, and approved videos didn't appear in search so had to send exact urls around
rogerdnixon Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 YouTube is outside of G Suite (Free and paid for Business/Enterprise) - so not covered by your agreement. However, it does work and our staff can approved videos and students get restricted. The absence of the blue bar is normally when on a PC the teacher has not signed into YouTube with their G Suite account (happens automatically on ChromeOS). So I'd check that first - might be obvious - but the only thing I've seen that can fox people. If its not that, make sure the teachers are in a OU thats has the correct policy applied - I do it via the permissions section - so the OU the teachers are in get restricted. If you just use the verified classroom teachers method - make sure the teachers are actually in the classroom teachers group - if they are not, they won't be able to approve videos.
ashleylewisms92 Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 I know Google Chromes GPO Templates enable a force of "safe search" for YouTube and Google Search...would that be any good as a workaround?
mbedford Posted July 25, 2017 Author Posted July 25, 2017 Thanks for the replies guys. I am signed into both Google and Chrome (via the settings page) with my managed account. Still just get presented with the black video screen saying "This video is restricted, try signing in" I feel like I am missing something on the Verified Teachers side of things. I have activated Google Groups for Business and given myself the status of a verified member in the Classroom teachers group, am I missing something?
mbedford Posted July 26, 2017 Author Posted July 26, 2017 I dont suppose any of you guys are free for a chat over Skype or Hangouts to guide me on this are you? I am pretty confident that I am missing a tick box somewhere but cant for the life of me work it out
