The last day to use your paper £10 notes is 1 March 2018. After this date you can exchange them at the Bank of England in person or by post. Some retailers, banks and building societies may still accept these notes; however this is at their own discretion...

While clearing dad's house we found some money (around £400) about half of it was in the form of withdrawn £5 and £10 notes. I had thought that our only option now was to send them or take them to Threadneedle Street.

 

However, yesterday we found that we could deposit them in one of the ATMs in Santander (other banks may do this also?) The ATM counted the notes, gave us a cash value and a receipt when it had been posted to the account. It took exception to two of the £10 notes that had been folded over at the corner, but otherwise, things went very smoothly.

My cousin has been saving for years giving bits of money to my dad to look after. He came to get it out and most of it was old tenners. Bank swapped them with no problems.

For clarification: I was aware that some banks and building societies might still exchange old notes:

 

...Some retailers, banks and building societies may still accept these notes; however this is at their own discretion...

 

However, the ATM 'method' of depositing them into an account to be withdrawn later is a service that one can be confident will be offered (by Santander, in my hometown at least...)
