[sims] mapping legacy GCSE grades to new 1-9 grades

I am in the process of generating KS4 targets and need some assistance how to map the old GCSE grades to the new equivalent GCSE grade. Since we know the correlation between KS2 and Legacy GCSE grades, I can easily set the target for the Legacy grades, for example if I want 3levels of progress then I add 13 to the KS2 and find the corresponding GCSE grade. In order to set the target for 1-9 grade, firstly I find the Old grade and I want to convert this to the new 1-9 grade.

According to the points shown on the 4Matrix (analyse software that we use at our school), I have roughly converted the grades as below and wondering if anyone confirm whether this is correct. Please note that I need the fine GCSE grades (A, B and C refers higher, middle and low respectively).

 

A*1 --> 9 ; A*2 --> 8A ; A*3 -->8B ; A1 --> 8C ; A2 --> 7B ; A3 -->6A ; B1 -->6B ; B2 --> 6C ;

B3 --> 5B ; C1 --> 4A ; C2 --> 4B ; C3 --> 4C ; D1 --> 3A ; D2 --> 3B ; D3 --> 3C ; E1 --> 2A

....etc.

Not seen GCSE's split into top middle or bottom of analysis before. Nothing should really should map to grade 9 as according to the DfE only a very small % of students will be able to achieve this grade, which wasn't the case with an old A*

 

Also I'd wait until the confusion over whether a grade 5 (Ebac measure) or 4 (% Eng & Ma measure) counts as the golden 'standard'. Once we have this anchor point to an old grade C then it's easier to compare to the legacy grades.

You are right that 9 shouldn't map to the Legacy grades. In my case, we wouldn't have any targets set to A*1 so I can take the 9 off.

Somehow we have to set the targets and there are no guidelines how to go about setting targets from KS2 to new GCSE grades, we have to rely on our existing method.

Hope this will lead to close to desired outcome.

Largely there's no guidance because the DfE isn't in the business of setting student level targets.

 

If you're happy enough with your old methodology then it might be easier to do a two step conversion - so levels to GCSE fine grades then GCSE fine grades to Grades 9-1 using this from the DfE: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/596393/Grading_new_GCSEs_from_2017_v4.pdf

FFT Aspire has individual student GCSE targets (estimates) that use the new 1-9 points system thats has been broken into 6- 6, 6+ etc. These run form your current Y11 to Y7. They are also aligning their methodology more towards the DfE's P8 system.
