Office 365 & Onsite Exchange DNS / Hybrid questions

Currently DNS and MX records are pointing to my onsite exchange server. My setup is a hybrid system, so emails are forwarded to my small test O365 mailboxes.

 

Any users who have O365 Mailboxes have to use the O365 Portal to access emails and internal mailboxes use the current onsite OWA portal.

 

If I change the DNS & MX records to point to O365 - will the following happen?

 

1. Will the current onsite OWA address will redirect to O365 login page?

2. O365 will forward emails to mailboxes still on onsite Exchange server without any config changes?

3. Mailboxes users on either onsite or O365 wont notice any difference other than Login page and login details?

 

Does that sound about right?

 

Also, current settings on devices will need altering so they use full email address as username.

Hi I'm just in the process after 3 years of having a 365 tenant going through setting it all up, it wasn't mature enough for education initially but it has progressed massively in the last 18 months. I've just spent 2 weeks sorting out our hybrid mail routing, with support from Microsoft And Sophos, it's by far the most complicated setup ever ! [emoji3]

To answer your questions,

1 no, owa and 365 are seperate products.

2. Not sure what you mean here, if it's hybrid mail is already routing to the cloud via exchange, unless you mean you are literally forwarding email to office 365

3. Onsite users login via owa, 365 users login via 365 portal so yes they are different.

1. Yes your onsite OWA can redirect to Office 365 if the mailbox is in the cloud not onsite however not the other way around. So in short - keep everyone using onsite OWA unless A. They are savvy or B. You fully migrate (google up guide to setup office 365 OWA redirect hybrid). I did this back a year and a half ago while doing Hybrid migrations from on-prem to cloud.

2. Yes but only if you have the correct connectors and setup.

3. Correct however there are some caveats such as calendars etc... between on-prem and cloud if sharing mailboxes.

 

I can't remember all the settings off the top of my head however you can do everything you asked and there's great guides out there for it all too as long as you stay away from the Technet ones as they are way too long winded compared to the actual process.

Another question but this time about Filtering.

 

On Premise currently uses Kaspersky - when I change DNS setting to use O365, I take it O365 filtering will take over and I can remove Kasperksy?

I am thinking of moving from Exchange 2007 on prem to office 365 is there anything I should consider ?, I'm new to this so I wouldn't where to start.

I would personally upgrade to Office 2013 or 2016 then go hybrid
