FN-GM Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 Hello, I thought I would create a thread that people can post links to applications that run in the browser. Great for Chromebooks but also useful on Windows & Mac. I will start with a few Photoshop Alternative https://pixlr.com/editor/ https://www.photopea.com/ Sound Studio https://soundation.com/studio Sketchup https://my.sketchup.com/app Scratch https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor 3

dhicks Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 (edited) I thought I would create a thread that people can post links to applications that run in the browser. Good plan. Soundtrap - audio / music editing: https://www.soundtrap.com/ WeVideo - video editing: https://www.wevideo.com/ Explain Everything - presentations (a bit like Powerpoint, Smartboard software, etc): Edit: sorry, turns out this is app-based only, there's no web-based client, but it does still come bundled with the above two web-based applications. https://explaineverything.com/ The above three all integrate with Google logins and whole-school licenses can be bought as a bundle from XMA. For Python (and blocks-based (like Scratch) / Turtle) programming - runs in the browser, nothing to install, a nice sandboxed development environment if you're worried about the security of your network: https://trinket.io Again, integrates with Google logins. Also for sound / music: https://flat.io Edited June 22, 2017 by dhicks 2

Arthur Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Both of the following web apps are from the developer of Screencastify (Manuel Braun). HTML5 Webcam Recorder (cam-recorder.com) Cam Recorder is a free online tool that allows you to record videos with your webcam. All you need is a web camera and an up-to-date web browser. After recording, you can directly upload your video to YouTube or save it to disk. Privacy Note: Recording happens completely locally. Your camera stream and your recording is not shared with anyone, unless you explicitly choose to upload it. QR Code Scanner (the-qrcode-generator.com/scan) If you use a modern web browser (recent versions of Firefox or Chrome) and have a webcam, this site allows you to scan QR Codes with your web browser. You can use this to send a link from a phone to your desktop browser for example. Privacy Policy Our Services are not intended for and may not be used by children under the age of 13. 6Foot2 Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Link: Typely - Free Online Proofreading Typely does not focus on grammar, which is at once too easy and too hard — too easy because, for most native speakers, it comes naturally; too hard because, in its most general form, detecting grammatical errors is AI-complete, requiring human-level intelligence to get things right. Instead, we consider usage: redundancy, jargon, illogic, clichés, sexism, misspelling, inconsistency, misuse of symbols, malapropisms, oxymorons, security gaffes, hedging, apologizing, pretension, and more... 2

jinnantonnixx Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 (edited) I've started to make a few music projects in Bandlab. It's a full-featured audio/midi workstation. Stand-out features for me are the pattern-based drum machine, the fantastic effects (go beyond the presets), automation on both MIDI and audio and the overall ease of use. It's an extraordinary web-app. If you have any interest in making music, you must try this. https://www.bandlab.com At present, only the Chrome browser supports all the features. TIOAOA Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 Sorry about the thread resurrection, but looks like this is the best place to ask this. Can the collective share any Play Store APPS that are good for education. We just purchased a set of chromebooks and are looking for some maths / english game type APPS for primary pupils along with anything else you all find works well.
rhyswills Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 Google Jamboard is a great for smartboards... We're currently testing RD Web Client for running windows only apps with Chromebooks.
Sonic3 Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 This thread is great! Any more web based video editing programs? WeVideo is excellent but a bit pricey. Is anyone using an alternative?
redtomato Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I've tried various grammar checking 'tools' and am not satisfied with any of them. Either they provide too many bogus suggestions, or try to make it seem like your writing is worse than it really is. I've been trying various editing services with the latest being a small outfit out of Canada, and they seem to be a lot better than the ones that charge more like scribbr which is in the netherlands. Anyone else have any suggestions?
6Foot2 Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I'd say that as far as false positives go, I treat it as a 'stop and think' prompt [Did you really want to say that?] Draw your attention to it, check it, yup, that's what I meant and move on. Suggestions (Browser based) [if you haven't tried them already] Link 1: LanguageTool - Online Grammar, Style & Spell Checker Link 2: Grammarly
redtomato Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I'd say that as far as false positives go, I treat it as a 'stop and think' prompt [Did you really want to say that?] Draw your attention to it, check it, yup, that's what I meant and move on. Suggestions (Browser based) [if you haven't tried them already] Link 1: LanguageTool - Online Grammar, Style & Spell Checker Link 2: Grammarly Thanks - I've actually tried grammarly and found them to be ok, but even after submitting to their paid service it didn't improve my document much. I'm not concerned about plagiarism so I don't value that feature. I write a lot academically and unfortunately humans are still the way to go. The outfit I'm currently trying is editmypaper.ca but I'm really looking to cut costs and find something more automated. I'm also concerned that some of the free ones are storing/using my documents elsewhere. Language tool is interesting and I like it more than grammarly (also like how it's EU funded and open source, if you know what you're doing which I don't), but it still isn't great. I think IBM (Watson) or similar will come out with a better AI based checker. In the mean time I've also been using gmail.com by pasting in my text and it has a nifty click to correct type of checker. Thanks for your suggestions though.
