timbo343 Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Looking through our DHCP leases, i see something has an IP address of 172.16.24.116 with the host name of W20583bwhomeoffice.uk.wal-mart.com and i was wondering how on earth i find out where on the network (physical location) this is as we've not plugged in anything of late. The trouble is we can ping the dam thing.
fiza Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 If you get a console session to your core switch and then ping it from there then do 'sh arp' or equivalent command it will show you which port the reply came from. You could then narrow it down in that way to a particular port on a particular switch. If its wirelessly connected it should show on your wireless controller with an indication of which AP its connected to. That too should help narrow it down.
jhothersall Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I've had that, was a ex BMW tablet with a similar hostname, I would put it on the Deny list and no doudt they will see you if it stops working.
timbo343 Posted May 17, 2017 Author Posted May 17, 2017 After i posted i checked the wireless controller, nothing on there and if it was id be worried as that address is for the domain network / domain wireless. Ive set it to deny in DHCP and deleted the record however it still continues to ping. Its not a printer as these are given manual ip addresses and the print server would show it as offline. I know its a HP device as the MAC resolves to a HP Nic.
FN-GM Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 It will still ping until your lease comes to be renewed. Look in you mac address table on your switches and you will be able to narrow it down to a specific port.

Thanks, ive tracked it down to one of the ports and looked around the area that feeds that cabinet, nothing out the ordinary. I wonder if its the POE switch that we have for the phone system? Will do a bit more digging when im home.
Chris_Cook Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I had something similar, it was the management interface on a bunch of refurbished Dell PCs we purchased last year. I think wall-mart might have been the original owners of many of these.
karldenton Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 We have a few such as WW07389707.europe.bmw.corp Like Chris says these are refurb machines and BWM might be the original owners
