talksr Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Hi, I have an HP server with two 500gb hdds running a RAID1. We have recently ordered two 1tb hdds which will fully populate this four bayed server. The server is running Server 2012 and has a 150gb C partition and a 450 D partition. I am assuming this is not possible, but am I able to add the two new 1TB drives to this existing raid, or would I need to delete the entire raid and start again?
Domino Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Different size drives complicates it, would a second RAID1 as an extra logical disk allow you to move things around? 1
sted Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 with raid one without fiddling i suspect not as its a 2 drive (minus hot swap) system. you might be able to convert it to raid 5/10 but it depends on the card/software and with mixed size drives not an ideal proposition (unless you dont mind using 1tb drives as 500gb) as above id just add it as a 2nd raid 1 array and have an E: 1
talksr Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 Thanks both, yes does sound like more trouble than it is worth. I will go with a separate E drive for now. Shame they had not got the 1tb's initially, as it would have made life a little easier!
Joanne Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I did this a few years back... but you might need downtime. The fujitsu server did anyway.... Remove one drive, stick 1TB in... rebuild. Remove second drive, add second 1TB... rebuild. Extend partition over RAID. Make sure your backups are VERY GOOD! (This might be bad advice!) 1

Maybe I could try this on an older server, if we have one first!
Joanne Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Yeah definitely worth a shot. It was a similar situation where the server came with 500's and the upgrade to TBs didn't arrive until a few weeks later, by which time we had already set up and installed the server, because the school were desperate.
mikkydoos Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I'd buy another 1tb and create a new array with a spare. Copy it over at half term. Use the 500's for something else.
