Nagios plugin enable/disable interface

I'm looking for some way to ensure automatic failover of our main proxy to a backup connection and to notify me when it has failed.

 

Our proxy software smoothwall corporate guardian can only determine if the connection has gone down via a ping, this is no good as the lea blocks pings to website outside of the country wan.

 

I was thinking of putting a nother nic into my nagios box.

 

Setting smoothwall to ping the ip of this interface.

 

Use http_check against google for example.

 

If check fails then run a command to disable this interface.

 

Therefore smoothwall ping will fail and the connection will failover.

 

Once the main connection comes up again nagios will be able to get google and enables the interface.

 

Smoothwall will be able to ping interface again and connection will fail back.
