Hi,

I am sure you are all plauged by the Long Path issue where if you open a file from a folder that is in a long path explorer.exe restarts so that users have to re-navigate the long tree to get back to the folder should they need to open 2/3 files this is very time consuming. I haven't been able to find a fix online. Does anyone have any genius suggestions/fixes?

I suspect the answer is going to be wait for Microsoft to fix it but from what i've seen it's been going on for several months already!

We had crashing Explorer when search 2 specific folders, both had files in them over the max path length.

Have tracked it down to the thumbnail generator which seems to touch each file during the search, when it trashes a file with a path over 260 characters it crashes Explorer.

As a temp workaround (until MS fix it ) I have deployed a gpo to set folder options 'always show icons, never thumbnails'

Users can untick it if they want to have thumbnails but risk crashes.

Window 10 also has a new gpo which allows long path names over 260 but I have head it can cause compatability issues with some apps that use non standard system libraries to access files

Hi,

I managed to work out the GPO and this appears to have resolved the issue temporarily. Let's hope Microsoft bring out a permenant fix shortly. Thanks for your help.
