update loop

Had to reinstall WSUS after Microsoft broke it on Windows 2012. In my hurry I seem to have approved "Windows 7 and 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-us" upgrade (probably done in a batch with a bunch of other updates). I now have a load of Windows 7 PCs stuck in an update loop (constantly asking to be restarted to complete the update), and constantly trying to install (and failing on) the same upgrade.

 

I've Declined the update in WSUS, but the clients still get the following:

 

[ATTACH=CONFIG]41810[/ATTACH]

 

Anyone come across this before?

Trying doing a "wuauclt /detectnow" at the command line on one of the offending machines. Maybe if it see the update has been declined it won't attempt to install it on reboot. Just grasping at straws here....

I (eventually, through trial and error) found a solution that worked (you should do this after removing the offending update from WSUS, otherwise, to the state obvious, it will install the same update again and the same thing will happen):

 

1. Stop the "Windows Update" service (through services.msc)

2. Delete the C:/windows/SoftwareDistribution/ folder

3. Open regedit. Expand "HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/WindowsUpdate/Auto Update" and delete the “RebootRequired” key.

4. Reboot and rerun Windows Update. It should now complete without the reboot loop.
