Octrader Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 I recently purchased a refurbish HP Elite ...clean I am wondering what you would recommend for programs for security/virus/malware and what in general would be useful extras besides my "intended use" program RECOMMEND? Virus Program Simple Spread Sheet/Charting program Computer "cleaning" program
mrwoberts Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 AV - Depends on what your intended use is. If you regularly visit sites that will put your PC at risk then you'll need a paid product, something like BitDefender of Kaspersky. If you are a relatively careful user then the free version of BitDefender or Avira. Office - Libre Office (Writer, Spreadsheets...) Cleaning - CCleaner (piriform.com)
Arthur Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 Simple Spreadsheet/Charting program Google Docs / Sheets Computer "cleaning" program Personally I would reinstall Windows using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool and not bother with any "cleaning" programs. The refurbisher could have installed anything on the laptop. 1

Good idea, although one pass of zeros is sufficient (assuming the PC has a HDD rather than an SSD?). Running DBAN on the latter would not be a good idea! Hopefully the laptop desktop wasn't refurbished by the FBI or NSA? Edited February 16, 2017 by Arthur

Unlikely, HP elite is a desktop, I don't think they sold an option with an ssd, I suppose one could have been installed later though
