Hi all, I inherited this school website and unfortunately the person updating it seems to have broken it - i have limited html knowledge and wondered if anyone could cast an eye over the code and tell me why on earth it's stopped working. Whenever i try to save and update the other files attached to this template. it throws up an error about a unbalanced end of instance tag. I may be blind but i just cant see it.

Ignore what I wrote earlier.

I'll start again!

Apologies @Frut02 - was trying to help with post formatting and did more harm than good!

It depends on what you expect the layout to be at the end. It's got a nested table, so interpolating what the intention was, which seems to create links down the left hand side, try this:

I believe this is because you have but no matching tag. I did a quick search and found some random source code containing the tags, i.e. Development and Production - PAJ Systemteknik , and at the top of that you can see

To that end the following might work - though I have to admit to being unfamiliar with this language and as such any other parameters InstanceBegin may require

To be honest I ignored those instance tags because they are in html comments. Unless it's being parsed by another system that requires them.

It's been arranged to allow a user to edit some sections.

I found a number of broken tags around the nested Table, so figured the problem was likely there.

The problem with ignoring them is that the original post explicitly stated

it throws up an error about a unbalanced end of instance tag

My guess is this is used in some sort of templating system that relies on the comments being balanced. Most browsers are able to handle all kinds of broken HTML, they don't normally throw such a cog about unbalanced tags. Frameworks / templating systems tend to though. I use Ember a lot and if the tags are mismatched there the Handlebars parser throws all kinds of errors making it clear that you haven't matched your closing tags up correctly!

Fair enough. So I guess a combination of our changes will do the trick. :)

Ideally, @Frut02 you need a backup copy to compare to, or another template file which you can use to find the syntax for the 'begin instance' tag, then the other changes in html i made will hopefully at least make it work.

One thing to bear in mind, the forum processing stupidly parses the '..' in the links so instead of them being relative to the files location, it's actually parsing them as the edugeek.net webpage root.

In testing, you'll want to do a find and replace on 'http://www.edugeek.net/forums' and replace it with '..' else your images and links won't work.

This was the issue i was battling with before to make the code appear correctly.

I'm surprised that a templating system like this which is marking areas as 'begin editable' and 'end editable' allows changing the pure html. You'd think there is a user interface through which the editable sections are exposed to protect the integrity of the document. Either way, a backup or old copy is going to be really helpful. Or even just a sample from whichever program is providing this framework.
