[CMIS] to [SIMS] Running a CMIS report from a SIMS exported one.

Hi guys, hope you can help.

 

I have a .ReptDef file from SIMs I want to import into to use with CMIS (Facilities Administration Version 16).

 

Is it Possible?

From my previous life using CMIS I would say that almost certainly not.

It's a different format completely. I 'think' Facility uses .rp files.

Oh and also CMIS can do 100x more things in reporting than SIMS, so any SIMS report you import is going to be far less capable than something you can write in CMIS natively.

so if I was looking for a each grades etc for each student this comes with a specific result tag in SIMS, if I remember correctly. Is this the same in CMIS.

 

So for being so vague and unclear it's because I'm a little unsure myself.

I also have XML files of what the different aspects and that I need are. Can I just use this in CMIS facilities?

assessment data is stored totally differently in SIMS and CMIS.

 

In CMIS you have something similar to an aspect - but it can apply to any subject, in SIMS it's one aspect per subject.

 

You're better off asking CMIS users for a report they already have that does what you want, rather than trying to do a translation from SIMS to CMIS. Can you post up an example of the output you want, rather than the method of getting it?

Although, to get CMIS to do these things you need a certain skill set and experience with the system. SIMS is click a button reporting, CMIS is coding with no yellow highlight to tell you where you've missed a comma or bracket in an expression. With fewer schools using CMIS the pool of people with relevant experience in reporting is declining. The same is true for the application itself.

 

It's interesting that Tony Lockwood (formerly Serco Learning - CMIS/Facility) now works for Phil Neil working on SIMS product development.

Doesn't CMIS use SSRS?

Progresso uses SSRS, Facility CMIS uses a bespoke reporting engine.

At one point CMIS was scheduled to go with MS office reporting like SIMS, I even played with a development version that linked in to Office and it had potential. However, it was based on an old platform of code and the whispers where that nobody really understood how it all went together, especially after the development left Ireland and the plug was pulled and along came Progresso.
