Group Policy - wrong proxy getting picked up

Over the years our Domain has been migrated several times and is now on a Server 2012 R2 box which shares the DC role with a Server 2008 R2 box. Whilst on the old Server 2008 Standard box which was the main DC we had instances where Staff, and only staff, users were picking up a proxy that the original people who set the domain up probably used at another school (St.Marks.proxy....).

 

Recently, more and more staff are being hit by this wrong proxy issue and it now prevents Internet access. We have searched high and low to try and discover where this errant proxy setting is being populated from but so far with no success.

 

Is there any software tool available that might aid our search?

Could it be stored in the local user profile that is used when group policies aren't being applied? We can tell when there is an issue with Group Policy or Domain Controllers when our staff/students get no desktop background or proxy settings.

If you do not need this proxy server anymore then you can try the following:

 

search the registry of the domain controller. Any entry with that proxy server address you can safely delete.

Also remember there are about three different ways of setting the proxy in group policy, plus it might be set via logon script somewhere, you will need to check all policies for all of the different ways (sorry can't remember them off the top of my head).

 

Don't know a way of finding these besides running a text search on \\domain\sysvol\domain\policies for the incorrect proxy, then determine which policy it is in based on the folder GUID name.
