Can you use BNC CCTV video cables for 10base-2 networks?

I know these are RG59 cable, and thinnet at the time required RG58. I can't find any BNC 10base-2 patch leads on eBay. It's all either for CCTV/video or testers!

The two cables have different resistances.

I have my original 10base-2 cables here from 16 years ago and my first network, a couple of T connectors too.

Would they be of any use ? The serial hoarder side of me is shaking his head but i have to start somewhere to shrink all of this stuff.

75ohm for video/cctv 50ohm for HF/RF transmission cables.

 

Using the wrong cables and connectors may work to a fashion but will inevitably result in losses and impedance mismatches, just how badly those losses affect the equipment or application you use them for will vary.

 

Another thing to watch out for are some huge differences in the centre conductor pin some of the cheaper BNC plugs.

These really are the Bain of my life!

 

The repeated use of the wrong plugs in the wrong sockets results in spread contacts, poor connections and signal loss.

 

This really plays havoc with HD/SDI kit and I really take exception when some hamfisted plonker Rams a cheap 50ohm BNC plug/cable into an expensive 75ohm SDI encoder or camera and blanks out a satellite uplink!
