About this Mac doesn't come up

I am working on an Intel iMac (last gen, white, not core 2, I don't think) and it has OSX Server. When I click on About this Mac it stalls, nothing happens really and it never comes up. Everything else seems to work normally. Any ideas?

Have you tried repairing the permissions with disk utility? It's a good starting point if nothing else.

Unplugging the thing for 30 seconds and then plugging it back is a good fix for random problems. Oh and don't forget resetting the PRAM.

 

Seriously... a lot of Mac fixes seem to bear little resemblence to what you might expect. Permissions does sound like a likely option though.

The permissions repair hangs about 3/4 of the way though. Should it take long? It's a 500GB drive.

It's usually pretty quick IIRC. Maybe there's a fault with some of the hardware (perhaps a disk failure)?
