how to upgrade from 8.1 to 10

Hi,

 

my Dell OptiPlex 3020 is running windows 8.1 pro.

 

Dell support say I can only do a clean install to get windows 10.

 

We have an EES agreement with microsoft and I have access to the

full windows 10 iso and the MAK product key.

 

I would prefer not to have to do a clean install as my system has a lot of documents

etc and hyper-v hosts so is an "upgrade" possible direct to windows 10 keeping all my

installed software etc ?

Theoretically yes, but the best advice is to take a full backup before you start.

I've never bothered to do a full system image backup of my PC as most stuff is stored on the network

and other stuff I copy to usb from time to time.

 

Looking in windows 8.1 pro I eventually found a backup option here:

Control Panel -> System and Security > File History

System Image Backup

 

Would that do the job, e.g. just backup to usb?

 

Then burn win 10 education iso to usb e.g. using rufus and boot from that ?

 

Or can I just mount win 10 ed iso within 8.1 and run setup from withing windows?
