New to Smoothwall & Very Confused

Hello,

 

I'm a first time poster and I've been trying to get my head around Smoothwall. It was installed on an old server for me but some of the set-up wasn't done (cost didn't cover set-up) and I'm just stuck in a rut trying to sort it out. I know what I need I just dont know how to go about it and I'm not finding the research very easy. If there is a "for dummies" website Id be happy to use that but I just need some help please!!

 

I need a SSH login (which already pops up) with a timer. Its going to be used for filtering for iPad's and the computers, I found out that It doesn't log out the person you log in. I need it to be about 60 mins timeout, enough for the lesson. I'm not sure how easy this is.

 

I also dont know how to edit what the policies filter, like the websites and specific words it blocks? I've tried watching the youtube videos on the Smoothwall channel but I just dont seem to be getting it.

 

I hope I have come across clear enough!

Or if you give a rough location, there may be someone nearby who you could either go and look at their config, or they could nip and show you bits (for a packet of eduhobnobs for example)

We have just had smoothwall installed (although not yet setup by their engineers...we have it running)....we bought an S8 UTM.

Happy to share what little knowledge I have. When you say you are using SSH login - you have decided to use a captive portal? Including a captive portal for PCs? I'm not sure I would choose to do things that way. I assume (perhaps incorrectly) you have a server and Active Directory. I would set it for proxy authentication for PCs - and either push out a GPO with the proxy settings - or use a proxy.pac file via DNS or DHCP. This avoids computer users logging on to the PC and logging on again via a captive portal. All our tablets are BYOD - so we use enterprise authentication on are access points with smoothwall as the radius server. Smoothwall then knows from the wireless who is at each device without further logons. I guess for school tablets you will need to use a captive portal (do you lock the wireless to allow only these MAC addresses - or do you prevent users looking at the wireless code?) ...which I have not tried - but what you are suggesting sounds sensible. My recen hassles have been with https inspection - because seeminly quite a number of things don't like this - and while they may not be "blocked" by smnoothwall - the apps may not work without adding a shed load of URLs to bypass https inspection.
