Hyperlink Default

Hi all,

 

I have a Hyperlink problem on Windows 10 Edu 1607 I hope someone can shed some light on -

 

Using a GPO, I've created an XML answer file so Chrome has all its defaults. I've even created a custom value, so .URL also opens with Chrome, yet when I click a Hyperlink in MS Word, the end user is still prompted to choose a browser.

 

I'm 100% certain it's working, as I can verify this by looking at Default Programs.

 

Not sure what else Hyperlinks on a document would be classified as extension wise!? Many thanks!

The plot thickens...

 

I've even gone as far as setting Chrome to be the default browser (using a GPO), then deliberately setting IE as default, rebooting and my XML file is working, as all defaults are restored to Chrome.

 

I've tried the same steps on my own notebook (not domain connected) and the same behaviour occurs in Word 2016 clicking a hyperlink. The issue might be linked to 'Always use this app' but not entirely sure if I can supress this setting or not!?

 

Can someone else replicate this behaviour please?

I don't have 1607, but I had seen something similar in 1507 last year. I had Chrome, Firefox, and IE available and Chrome set as default through powershell xml import/export. If Firefox updated itself under another user account, Windows thought it was "new" and displayed a prompt to choose a browser whenever opening a link or typing one in the run dialog.

 

I fixed it by setting the GPO Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer > Do not show the 'new application installed' notification to Enabled, and I have not seen that dialog since then. Note: I don't set file associations by GPO so users can change e.g. their default browser from Chrome to Firefox if they want to.
