Move away from YHGfL - Child domain?

Morning all!

 

We're picking up a primary school who are leaving the LEA to become an academy. After having a look round on their servers, i've found that they seem to be a child domain of the YHGfL's monster domain. Has anyone had any experience of this in the past? I know I can recreate the domain and AD, but that will cause havoc with passwords and local profiles on machines, profiles etc.

 

I have the sneaky feeling the answer will be a resounding "no", but is it possible to turn this child domain into the parent domain for the school? Any other niggles/problems I might run into when moving away from a YHGfL/LEA maintained school?

You'll need to use ADMT to migrate data from the child domain into a brand new AD domain. There will be problems.

 

How big is the primary? You might be better off just building a new domain, creating a trust between the child domain and the new one, then slowly migrating users and PCs across manually, with a goal to decommission the child domain in say... 12 months. If it's a small school I'd be inclined to call all laptops etc in over the summer and just build a new domain, rebuild PCs etc and start fresh.

 

You need to plan to do this before the split off from the LEA, the child domain won't last long without contact with the parent.
