Can anyone recommend a system for geo locating iPads?

 

Is there a facility within LightSpeed Mobile Manager?

There is if you put the iPad into 'Lost Mode'.

 

I haven't actually had to test it outside of school, but it's on my list of 'things to do', so I'd be interested if anybody has actually verified this.

 

I'm not sure how accurate it would be since ours would rely on connecting to a Wi-Fi signal and I'm not sure how that would be possible since they are locked to our Wi-Fi network in a profile.

 

Also in 'Lost Mode' nobody would be able to connect to another Wi-Fi network... There is a warning on their info pages:

 

WARNING: Due to an issue with Apple, it has been found that when putting a device that has a passcode configured into Lost Mode, a subsequent reboot will cause the device to lose connectivity. Once in this state, there is no way to unlock the device and the only known way to recover the device is to perform a restore. Nevertheless, Lost Mode is still the preferred method for locating lost or stolen iOS devices.

 

Meraki does this, however also on a Wi-Fi only basis for us due to no 3/4G. I have laptops and Android tablets enrolled and that has produced some bizarre results saying devices on-site are actually in London somewhere (possibly due to being on LGfL and the device reporting their datacentre/servers or Network backbone?).

its not lgfl related i came to the conclusion that data may as well be made up as loads of ones that have never left a building in leeds show up in wimbledon for some reason

This mirrors our findings with the Meraki MDM.

Casper/Jamf pro has this also. You need to use lost mode and it seems accurate within 20 metres in the few times I've used it.

 

For those that have dropped wifi connection you can trick the ipad into thinking it has an Ethernet connection so that it will get the command to unlock the device:

 

This works most of the time but I have had 1 or 2 cases where this hasn't worked.
