mats Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I don't think I've seen this discussed here, but somebody's been gaming google to get some the views of some rather unsavoury groups to the top of search results. Given how many children unquestioningly trust the first items that come back, it's really worrying. Google "did the holocaust happen" or see what autosuggest comes back with if you type "are muslims" or "are women" queries. Also Google responds on skewed Holocaust search results - BBC News https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/dec/17/holocaust-deniers-google-search-top-spot I'm not one for censoring search results, but pagerank is clearly vulnerable to manipulation which makes it return barefaced lies.
Opendium_Steve Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I'm not one for censoring search results, but pagerank is clearly vulnerable to manipulation which makes it return barefaced lies. I'm not sure there's a good solution. Even if Google prioritises the mainstream news channels, it will still be full of bare faced lies (e.g. the contents of the Daily Mail, which I'm sure would be considered a "radicalisation" or "hate speech" website if it weren't so mainstream). The only thing I can think is if Google were to fact-check everything in their search results and assign some kind of "truth score", which seems utterly impractical.
