Do you allow this for student use? Would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this.

 

A brilliant resource, but also opens the door to allow students bring in games/malicious files?

We allow people to use it as they wish (within AUP), but also inform them that the supported method for access is via Remote Desktop/HAP etc and anything held in it isn't backed up in the same ways.

 

In regards to the games/malicious aspect nothing should be affected by OneDrive compared to any CD/USB etc, if it's blocked in terms of running said file it'll still be blocked, and if it's anything illegal/not allowed that's a normal AUP action

Bit how do you monitor it?

 

For example, we have to allow .exe files to be run for students for programming. So they could use onedrive for files like that...

 

It really is catch22.

We don't allow exe's on the main network at all (unless it's one of our areas obviously). Programming is in VMs only.

 

How would you monitor if they bring in exe's on a USB/DVD etc?

We promote the use of OneDrive over USB's where possible, it saves people having to remember them and avoids losing them. I'm actually in the process of updating our policies to cover OneDrive in more detail as when I looked into what we have, they still refer to it as SkyDrive :-/ And there was no mention of what types of data they can store on it - important for Staff especially when taking work home!
