We have 1 computer where when the user tries to print the computer freezes and the only way for her to get out of it is to switch the computer off. It doesn't happen all the time either. It will freeze when trying to print from word, excel, SIMS. No one partical app.

We have so far;

Reset user profile (we still have roaming profiles)

Changed patch leads

Changed network port

Changed computer

Running out of ideas but the issue is happening on a daily basis. Doesn't happen to anyone else in that office.

Any ideas?

Is it all users on that computer? Or just the one?

Did you try to isolate the driver via Print management to see if it's an issue with that and the spooler clashing?

That one user is the only user of that PC. We deploy our printers via script and all users in that office use the same script. Same drivers get downloaded for all of them. I can't see how it would be drivers?

What about another user on the same PC?

What about old printers or network drives?

Is it the default printer?

Can the user print to any other printer?

Just started happening?

No other users use the PC.

Old printers or network drives? Care to expand on that?

Its any printer not just the default. The machine is connected to the follow me and a local colour printer. She mainly uses the follow me to print to the MFD in the same room.

Its happened intermittently for about 6 weeks maybe more.

Do you use any print management software like Papercut/PCounter? Could their account have issues in there?

We do use papercut and staff print to shared accounts. The shared accounts do not have any quotas.

Sorry, didn't even get to the part where you'd changed the actual computer!

Just that sometimes old printers and network drives lurking about, cause issues with applications that try to find them and hang because they can't...

But it happens when printing to the local colour printer?

Even on a different computer?

Normal network usage is fine browsing shares/internet etc?

Sorry should clarify - when I say local colour printer I mean its in the same room not locally attached.

We haven't asked the user to change seats as the office is fully staffed so someone else would have to move aswell.

There are no issues with browsing shares/internet etc. The network card is connected at 1Gbps.

Oh... changed computer....

When you deleted the roaming profile did you:

Check that she hadn't logged onto that PC before and checked for a local copy of her profile

Delete any local copies of the profile

Delete the reg key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and delete the users entry.

Still sounds like driver to me though.

Roaming Profiles...? So profile corruption follows you around? Onto different computers?

Would this make my next 'deleting printers from the registry' comment redundant?

Good point - We didn't clear the local copy.

Will change the profile again today, remembering to delete local copy and report back tomorrow.

You'll have to delete the server side profile again too. It will have copied back at logoff if there was a local one present.

Does the user run any particular program or add-on that is different to anybody else? Maybe a virtual printer program like CutePDF? Does it only freeze up when printing, not during any other network browsing tasks?

Is there any mileage in completely deleting and re-creating the user account? Remove all traces of the old profile from client and server and trying again.

There are no add-ons. The person is our Cover Manager so works mainly in SIMS and Office Programs. The build on the PC is exactly the same as other admin machines. We have done all the profile stuff and changed all the hardware.
