Camcorder suggestions

Morning all,

 

One of our academies is looking at getting a camcorder for various events (don't worry about legal aspects etc, this is just about the kit). They have requested something similar to the Sony A1E (which is an old tape based thing), so I'm thinking semi-pro camera. Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking possibly Canon XA30 with wireless mic to allow better pick up, but does anyone have any experience at the bottom end of the pro scales?
