ass17 Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Hi, Has anyone setup presto server 2 yet? Reason I ask is because is a lot more complex than version 1. It seems to now almost like a bonjour gateway system that always advertisement of airplay and AirPrint services over multiple subjects/VLANs. Can anyone confirm this and have you set it up yet? Any advice what you have done would be great, Thanks.
MatthewL Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Done a few, quite easy just click next through it, any printers that are on the server will be shared out, if you don't want them to be you can set the tag of do not advertise. You can set authentication for printers and use the Presto app to control this on Android or Apple. Not used it on Chromebooks yet but told its easy. If you use PaperCut sharing the follow me queue through this and authenticating is so easy, also you can publish different printers depending who authenticates. Any questions feel free to ask.
ass17 Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Ok great, few questions. Can we advertise specific printers on different subjects? Or if not authenticate then against AD group memberships. Need to lock down pupils to certain printers and staff get all. Also we use s bonjour gateway to advertise PCs running AirServer over airplay, can presto do the same job?
MatthewL Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 You can authenticate against AD groups/users but you will need to use the Presto app for this, if they are shared iPad's set the printers to strict authentication, it will prompt everytime but at least only those that can, can print if you get me. I don't think you need anything extra as there are some AirPlay functions built in, I've not had the need to try this, I've only done printers. Get it installed and have a play. You may need to configure the DNS zones if you have multiple VLAN's but I do have the documentation for this.
ass17 Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Thanks, yes we allow three vlan'd wifi networks to print via AirPrint using version 1.6, we also have Papercut running on our print-svr, will it still work do you know?
MatthewL Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Have a look here. PaperCut works like a dream using it, the only thing is if staff use accounts they have to go to printserver:9191/client to select but I know PaperCut were working on adding a bit of a bypass if jobs were printed via this a bit like email and cloud print jobs.
ass17 Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 It seems like we will go down the unicast DNS route rather than extenders on each subnet, just seems over kill to me. One I have it working on one subnet I can follow the same pointers to apply it to other subnets. I'll see how I go with it, Lanny @ Collobos seems to be very prompt with my email replies so I'm sure between us all I'll get it up and running soon [emoji1][emoji106]🏻
MatthewL Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 They are a good team, there is only a few of them I believe its not a massive place. Since version 2 has come out its a vast improvement over the last one.
