Heya,

Currently relooking at our backup solution, as we have a number of issues with it

Our Primary storage is in one building & our veeam backup server is in another. This is a 30TB Raid 5 Windows server 2016 device that we run dedupe on to give us lots more space (It's currently sitting around 80% dedupe!) We then also back up weekly to tape. Our full backup is around 5TB (2.2TB is our main data server)

Downsides of it are

Slow restore time (Due to data needing to be rehydrated/transfered over building links)

Tape - Tape is just an unreliable mess. If the autoloader stops for whatever reason, it can waste a good chunk of our backup window. It's also fairly expensive to keep buying LTO 6 tapes at £20 a piece.

Dedupe - I had major issues with Dedupe corruption back before the summer on another server, because of this I'm really wary about using it on anything else nowadays & veeam also recommend you don't have your primary backup on Dedupe (Only using it for long term archiving - see koolaid link)

Raid 5 - Rebuild times are scary & in that time if you lose another disk you are screwed. I have a disk at the mo that's "awkward" & I'm wary about replacing it.

To get around this I'm looking a few options, one of which is moving the primary backup server down to the server room & junking the Raid 5 for Raid 10 (18TB usable) This enables really quick backup & restore times. Then either purchasing another device to do a "Copy job" to for GFS local archiving & then also sending the data offsite via Veeam cloud, or sticking to tape. - This is based on the "ideal" backup layout from Veeam

So I guess my question is - Does anyone else run something similar along these lines or am I being too paranoid? Also, everything I've found online regarding cloud connect pricing seems pretty horrific, given that in an ideal world surely you'd want the cloud provider to hold onto multiple restore points for long periods of time? i.e Weekly for a month, Monthly for 12 months?
