Some machines can't see any files in user$ share

We have seen this on two machines to date. When you browse to \\servername\users$ it shows an empty drive, you can browse to other shares on the same server successfully. However if you browse to \\ip of server\users$ you do see the subfolders. It can't be DNS as other shares work using \\servername. Any ideas?

clear the csc cache on 1 see if that helps
