Memory for a gaming rig

Hi, I have an ASUS z97 gamer pro motherboard with 2x 4gb crucial ballistix Tactical DDR3-1866MHz - which aparantly have very good timings.

 

Would like to get 16gb but not really sure about speed timings etc.

Has your motherboard got two or four memory slots ? If it has four, why not just buy another pair of what you have already ?

It has 4 slots.

 

My current memory is 1866mhz but the new ones are 2400mhz so I assume faster.

 

I seem to remember that my current memory had timings of 9.9.9 or something like that but the new ones are CAS 11-13-13-31, so not sure what to do, one bit is faster and one bit is slower.

 

Should I just get more of my old ones then?

Honestly... timings won't make that much difference except to benchmarking. The slower timings there are offset by the higher speed, and overall it pretty much balances out. Avoid the slowest of slow RAM, but no point in spending hundreds on silly kits.

Basically I want really good ddr3 memory, the faster the better for around £100

So the ones I found should be better than my old ones as they have a higher mhz.

 

So can you get them with the higher mhz but lower than 11 latency as that would be win win, but I cant seem to find any

Normally higher speed means higher latency--just the physics of the thing, I think. It's about balancing the two, as shown in that rough performance index from the conclusion of that article (the page I linked to).

They're probably about equivalent tbh. Probably get the 1866 kit cheaper, and its tighter timings will offset the speed deficit--though the difference on performance if you have a graphics card is almost non-existent.
