Not suprised to be honest, it was dying a slow death for a long time and it didn't help that Twitter was offering itself as a video hosting service. I personally think that Periscope will be next in the firing line. Twitter will just swallow the live streaming fuction in to it's own app and kill off Periscope, as having to use a different app is a hindrance to new(er) users than just having all the functionality in 1 app. Mark Zuckerberg can deny it all he wants, but not having Facebook and Messenger in 1 app is why Messenger is no where near as popular as it would be. I've personally stopped using it as much as I used to and I know a lot of others have too!

I think the aim of keeping facebook and messenger separate was to avoid the need for a facebook account and thus allow messenger to be used by people who didn't want fb accounts.

 

The reality is that people who are averse to fb don't actually want fb messenger anywhere near their phone contacts - and I can't say I blame them!

But don't you still need a Facebook account to use Messenger?

No you don't need an account. But if you don't have one then you have to give fb access to your phone contacts.

 

I'd rather have a fb account and put nothing in it than let fb have access to my contacts
