Veertu: Native virtualization for macOS

Veertu used to cost £29.99 in the Mac App Store, but as of today it's now available for free from their website since the developers decided to open source the app. This could be a good alternative to VirtualBox since it uses the hypervisor built directly into Apple's OS.

Native macOS virtualization

Veertu is built on top of macOS recently released Hypervisor.Framework. Veertu uses APIs provided by the framework for resource scheduling and power management, without the need to install kernel level extensions (KEXTs). Hence, there is no forced intervention at the kernel level and it lets macOS operating system manage virtualization resource needs in the same manner as other Native Mac Apps.

 

Sandboxed VMs

macOS kernel extensions modules built by third parties can potentially create security holes. Veertu virtualization is built entirely in user-space and uses only Apple approved Hypervisor.Framework interface. VMs in Veertu run without root permissions and keep your Macs security intact.

 

Use this feature along with ‘Read Only’ toggle, to run malware/security Build and Test VM based environments, without worrying about cross contaminating or infecting your Mac.

 

Snappy and Responsive like native macOS apps

Veertu operates like any other native Mac App and doesn’t change the overall desktop experience for the user. It lets macOS manage the scheduling of resources and power, without interfering or over riding it. As a result, the VMs running in Veertu feel snappier to work with.
