personal documet syncing onedrive vs offline files

Currently I use an old hp microserver and offline files to keep docs/photos/music etc synced between my laptops and pc. Im starting to wonder as its old (and its dropped the boot drive once luckily the data drives are stripped just lost windows) and I really don't want to spend the cash replacing it whether its sensible to just cough up for office 365 yearly and dump it all into onedrive (ive probably got 100gb of data (most of it photos) anyone gone this route and if so any issues (id have to alter what my surface pro syncs as its hdd wouldn't cope lol but I don't need all my photos on that device). Id imagine it would take forever to get all the data from a pc to the cloud and then a fair amount of time to do initial syncs on pcs but once done in theory it should be pretty seamless or in practice does it just not work that way. it seems ok for the odds and sods I have there now but ive not been using onedrive as primary storage

I do what you do by using Resillio. (https://www.resilio.com/individuals/) AKA BitTorrent sync.

 

Everything is on RAID arrays, I also have a share setup at my mums 120 miles away if the worst did happen I can just pull everything out of that folder.

 

Being a photographer I have many many TB's of photos as u can imagine, paying for a cloud service would be costly. I also RSYNC everything to a server at work.

iirc office 365 wit 1tb of storage is something like £70 a year and that's more than enough (and cheaper than replacing an aging box)

True, But I am fortunate. I have parts on Tap. Everything is imaged. If I have a main disk go down I can easily an rapidly deploy a new disk and restore the image and im back up and working. I'm not relying on an internet connection (I live in KC land) that will inevitably fail and files get missed or just don't upload. I know I have everything - everything is easily fixed. If the motherboard died in my storage server who cares ? I have plenty of spares ready to go in.

 

I have way more to backup/sync so to me 1TB + online would be expensive especially as my Photos grow etc.

We are currently setting up One Drive for business at my work. So I'll be testing how quick it actually is over the few months or so. However it is really easy to select which folders should be sync'ed and which should remain only on one drive.

 

I've got it sync'ing between my work pc and my own home pc no problem. I'll just need to test the speed and such on pc's and phones.
