Hey folks.

Earlier this year we moved from an onsite exchange to fully in the cloud syncing our users with Azure AD Connect.

We are looking to implement the In-Place archive for some of the SLT team.

Now, from what I can tell on the documentation you go to the mailbox in O365 then select 'In-Place Archive' OR you use PowerShell and set the archive that way ...

However, as with most of Microsoft documentation it doesn't seem quite that straightforward. The above method works for users who had their mailbox created in the cloud originally however users that pre-existed on the old exchange server comes up with the following error:

The following error occurred during validation in agent 'Windows LiveId Agent': 'Can't enable the archive for 'XXXXX' because this user object is synchronized with the on-premises directory. To enable a cloud-based archive mailbox for this user, you must use your on-premises Exchange admin center or Exchange Management Shell.'

We never properly decommissioned the old exchange server ... it's just been exported to a HDD and is sat on the shelf now.

Anyone got any idea's how I can enable this archive without running an onsite exchange?

I did some googling and I can see that a user with the msExchRemoteRecipientType attribute set to 4 indicates a user that has had their mailbox migrated.

If I change this to 3 (Provisioned Mailbox) would this allow me to set the Archive mailbox or will this just horribly break everything?

Thanks.
