Producing attendance reports with user defined groups

I have a group of students in a user defined group set up today, that I want historical data on. The problem is when I change the date to the last academic year 2015-16, the group doesn't show because it didn't exist. When I try to customise the dates for the group being 'active' to last year, it won't allow me to save it. Any ideas on a way round this please? We want to produce historical attendance data for the group and then look at interventions for this current academic year.

Pretty sure if you create a new group, you can set the academic year at the start
