UAP‑AC‑EDU with Public Address function

Hi,

 

Has anyone installed these UAP‑AC‑EDU? They are a Ubiquiti AP and a Public Address / Tannoy speaker combined. Ingenious!

 

Our head is looking for a Tannoy system and I have had several expensive quotes for IP based and Analogue system. I preferred the IP based system obviously. We also do not have any IP phones yet as I am aware that you can build a Tannoy system on top of VOIP technology.

 

Then I found the UAP‑AC‑EDU and as were have shortlisted Ubiquity for our overdue Wifi refresh it seems perfect for us.

 

I have no ideas of cost though. Has anyone any experience of these? Main issue is that we would probably need more speakers than AP's as having a speaker in every class would be required if the class is being noisy a speaker in the corridor would probably not suffice. Perhaps this is more suited for Lecture Theatres where there would be one AP per Theatre.

We bought all our Ubiquiti gear through @Millgate without any hassle. We've been using various models of UniFi APs for the past 3 (I think?) years and they've been fantastic. You'll need to run a controller 24/7 on a Windows or Linux box somewhere onsite or in the 'cloud', there's no licensing fees or anything.

 

You would definitely want a speaker in every room though, they're not loud enough to travel through walls well with a noisy classroom as you say and the speakers cannot run without an AP attached. We've not deployed the tannoys yet but we deploy an AP for each classroom anyway since this gets the best performance out of our iPad and Netbook trolleys.

 

Be warned, the speaker assembly is quite deep so you need to cut a fairly sizable hole in your ceiling for them, the easiest install they do is with drop ceiling tiles.
