revilo Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Ok, so i've been battling with this problem for months now. We redirect our start menu and desktop folders to a share on our NetApp SAN. Multiple users throughout the day complain that their icons disappear, and they have to log off/on to get them back again. I've done ping traces to the group policy server, the SAN, and to the machine from my machine and not a single packet is lost. No errors in Event Viewer. Network card drivers are up to date. SAN firmware is up to date. No errors on the switch. Has anyone else had a similar issue?! It's driving me insane! Thanks guys
6Foot2 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Do all redirected Start Menus/Desktops come from the same source? Does everyone lose the icons? Do the all lose them at the same time? If only some users lose the icons is it always the same users or does it vary? If only some users lose the icons what do they have in common? Security Group, Year Group, Staff Group, Specific Start Menu, or Desktop? Although our Start Menus and Desktops are redirected, they don't come from a share but are copied to the stations at start up. Could you consider this solution instead to eliminate this issue? HTH.

No If only some users lose the icons is it always the same users or does it vary? It varies If only some users lose the icons what do they have in common? Security Group, Year Group, Staff Group, Specific Start Menu, or Desktop? It's staff who complain (they share desktop/start menu) but it could also be students (they just tend to ignore it and log off/on and not tell anyone!) but they're all from the same share. I tested running it from a different share on a different server and the same thing happens. Although our Start Menus and Desktops are redirected, they don't come from a share but are copied to the stations at start up. Could you consider this solution instead to eliminate this issue? I could, but we change our icons a lot - do you have any issues deleting/adding new icons? HTH. Thanks!
6Foot2 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 ...do you have any issues deleting/adding new icons? The only issue that I can see is when we add new programs and then place the new icon in the share for copying to the station is that it does not become available to end users until after a station reboot. If the station cannot be rebooted straight away but the program has been deployed without the need for a reboot I have copied the icon to the local station folder for the user manually. It's a bit of a faff but it has only happened a couple of times since the network went in about three years ago.
revilo Posted August 9, 2016 Author Posted August 9, 2016 I think my main problem is it has worked perfectly for 3 years, and now all of a sudden it's doing this. It's really annoying!!

Something has probably changed/has been changed. Try to identify what that is/was. I know that isn't much help but it is the most likely explanation.
