ttricktt Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Hi eduGeek, I'm sure this question has been asked how to Upgrade Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro free? I'm using an installation ISO and the upgrade then ask for a key. I thought I can reuse the same key from 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10. These are domain computers, on our Windows 8.1 computers the free windows 10 upgrade button is not available. Do I need a new key for Windows 10 Pro and is the upgrade free? Thanks, Rick
FN-GM Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Use the tool on this page. If its a volume licence install it won't work. https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
mavhc Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 You can only upgrade to Win10 Home or Pro for free, and you need to be on Win7/8 Home/Pro/Ultimate, not Enterprise. You'll need to switch back to whatever OS they came with, you can install Win7 or 8 Pro from ISO, then for Win7 install the SLIC file for that motherboard, or for Win8 extract the key from BIOS, https://itsolutionsblog.net/3-ways-to-extract-the-windows-8-product-key/ Then run Windows 10 setup.exe on that computer and it should upgrade for free. Once it's upgraded you can image it to Win10 Pro from WDS etc without having to reactivate.
ttricktt Posted July 11, 2016 Author Posted July 11, 2016 Must be volume licence causing the no upgrade. The computers came with Windows 8.1 Pro, but they are imaged and a volume license is used after the install.
mavhc Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 So depends on which licence, some let you get the latest version as you're always paying, check your licence downloads. Or if you're not using the features, stop paying, install 8.1 pro, upgrade to 10.
ttricktt Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 So, it looks like it won't work out for me. Here was the install path. Computers came with Windows 8 home. Upgraded to windows 8.1 Pro Licensed from Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center. Any comments will be helpful. Thanks, Rick
mavhc Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Right, Volume Licensing doesn't upgrade. You could upgrade to Win 10 home if you put Win 8 home back, but that's not much use. Win 10 Education version will be licenced to upgrade from 8 Home, so look into your Volume Licensing to see if you'll get that
