As my 1tb xbox one is 95% or so full its obviously time to look at getting an external drive and moving some stuff to that. Is there any real advantage to picking a faster main powered desktop drive over usb 3 powered laptop drive based one (or even something like putting an ssd hybrid drive in an enclosure (i actually have a spare desktop enclosure but it rather not have the extra plug if its of no real benefit and my spare 2tb drive is one designed to go in a pvr so its slow. I suspect if i just used it to dump stuff i dont play often (still quicker than downloading gbs of patches) it would work but would a faster drive actually help gaming?

It needs to be a 3.0 usb drive, apart from that it shouldn't matter I don't think. I've got my old 2TB one on there and seems to be fine. Cant notice a difference between inbuilt hdd and external

It has to be at least USB 3.0 and to save/run you games from a USB drive it must be 256GB or more (any less then you can only sore media on it from the store like music etc).

its more whether theres any potential speed gain by shoving a 7200rpm drive or a hybrid drive on and using it as primary storage i assume if i just use it as a data dump as long as i move stuff to the internal drive to play it a slow drive will be no hindrance

Allegedly some SSDs are able to out perform the internal storage reducing load times (by a few seconds), can't find where I read that though now :confused2:

the only way its getting an actual ssd is if 1tbs are cheap enough i can replace the 512 in my laptop and the xbone can have the 512

My advice would be get a 256GB-512GB SSD in a USB 3 caddy and use that for you're most recently used/blockbuster games - significantly faster loading times. Leave all the dross on the 1TB drive then.

I've got a USB SSD drive on my XBox One and Fallout 4 loaded quicker when Fast Travelling between locations - noticeably faster :)
