Dell Latitude E5540 Vertical Line Down The Screens

It has come to our attention that there is a flaw in the design of the E5440 non touch screen laptops resulting in a problem with the screen.

 

Best not to carry these laptops by the hinge side when closed, as due to a 3mm gap between the lid and chassis the pressure seems to damage the display.

 

If you are already experiencing thin vertical lines appearing around the middle of the screen respond here and see if this is a global issue.

 

We are resorting to fixing a small rubber strip to the front of the bezel to support the screen when the lid is shut.

 

This fault does not affect other E5440 laptops that have the glass touchscreen as this is thicker !!

Whilst I understand your annoyance, it isn't really a design flaw, more mishandling. Laptops should never really be picked up by the screen or any pressure put on the screen, especially with how thin displays are these days. Laptops should be carried flat with hands under the base or stored in an appropriate carry case or cabinet.

 

Obviously kids and staff don't know this so accidents do happen, we've had it here.

I'v ehad this on the 5440's, Dell have just repaired them no questions asked!

It's pretty much how I normally carry my laptop:

 

I close the lid and then tuck it under my arm. Probably 80/20 hinge side vs latch side.

 

The only time I carry it level is when I'm using it a tray!

Its a massive design floor. The lid is not strong enough. We have had 8 of these go so far. They have left too much of a gap between the screen and palm rest. The users are not carrying just buy the screens! The problem is apparent when lid is shut. Laptops are portable devices if you are unable to carry them around whats the point. Once these are out of warranty they are going to be an expensive laptop to keep and maintain !
