What I pointed out to them was that some of us are already there, combining both the technical and the strategic workflows, which is how I see the NM role anyway...

Yes...the NM...but how about the other techs..? A single NM who also does tech work is fine, provided that's all you have...but if you have an NM plus a couple or more techs, do they really imagine they can elevate themselves 'up the value chain' (I bloody hate this sort of languages) and sit around discussing new initiatives..? I think we all know this will invariably lead to job losses.

Agreed on the job losses front, but in some teams, yes, this is possible.

Here, our Head has done what good leaders do and drawn together around him a team of people with similar-but-diverse views and strengths in media and marketing - we are now the team that manages all the school's internal marketing, photography, video creation, banners, posters, leaflets, social media, website articles etc. That team consists of myself as NM, my Technician, the Head of ICT (curriculum), the Librarian and the Head himself - we are due to extend it with an apprenticeship from next week also. The team has grown up organically around the Head and it's a wonderful addition to my role that I certainly wouldn't be without - just wish we could get TLRs for it, though!

Sounds nice - here the only vision for ICT is...me. Over many years and many line managers I have attempted to set up a working group containing essential people...one got excited about it for all of 5 minutes and decided we'd call it the ICT Strategic Development Group...but coming up with the name clearly exhausted him, as that was the sum of his involvement...

It was similar here too on that front. Now the strategic developments are mainly driven by me, with contributions from the Head and the Head of ICT and sign-off by the Head.

We have a firewall between us and the Principal...everything has to go through LMs...none of which are remotely interested in ICT and shoehorn me in when they can find time...am I frustrated? Yes. Am I leaving? Yes.l

Well, quite. And that, Principals and Principalettes, is how you lose good people!

Sad really...I like to think I do a good job, but it could be so much better if SLT here still didn't regard ICT pretty much as witchcraft. I'm off to try and eke out a living working for myself.
