5 Year Plan,

 

Your thoughts regarding the reality of a 5 year plan!

 

Seems a long way down the line with IT related gear and licensing.

 

With time scales of replacing we can say x amount for servers and y amount for desktops as an idea but not sure with costs, we can give today's pricing i suppose to work off.

 

How do you do it?

I give guestimates. So eg/ I tend to replace things like heavily used machines when their 3 year warranty is up. Servers when warranty is up - mainly because it needs a new OS by that time aswell. I also put stuff in there like software renewals and whatnot. PM me if you want to see my 5 year plan.

It's pretty easy to create a list of hardware that will most likely need replacing in 5 Years. I have a list that will need replacing in 12 > 24 months that are a medium > high risk. After that it, it's planning the low risk things. Even our primary data server is something to keep an eye on the coming months > year or two.

 

You can add the IF statements for reliability.

 

Once the above is done I will plan the next step so if/when I move on the next person will see the next 5 years worth of stuff to worry about.

Year 1-3 can be planned accurately, year 4 and 5 can have a rough outline but on the premise that it is updatable/fluid as by the time you get to year 5 there may be significant changes which would render you're old plan redundant. 5 year plans can be useful for long term strategy with items that are not replaced very frequently, servers, switches, UPS, air conditioning, etc.
