System Centre / Software Centre

Hi All,

 

I'm pretty new to SCCM which was installed by a previous technician and forgotten about. I'm reviving it and doing some tests to get my head around it.

 

For now I'm just deploying software to my own machine by putting myself in a collection with a selection query.

 

Question is, it doesn't appear in Software Centre, even though i marked it as Available and not "required".

 

If i look at the application catalogue (accessible via software centre link) it shows.

 

Is there a reason it doesn't appear in available software in software centre?

You will need to "Enable the new Software Center" option in SCCM for it to show in the Software Centre. Not sure the exact reasoning though.

Don't need the new version for it to work, old one works fine still.

 

How long ago did you deploy it to the machine as the client takes longer to update than the catalog?

 

Is it set to allow installation outside of maintenance windows?

 

Did you deploy it to users rather than computer group? (Else wouldn't show up for user within centre)

I Dont seem to have this option? Unless its the "additional software" part

I deployed it to a test collection that i manually added myself and one other user into, to test.

 

It did show up in the client, after i installed it via catalog, maybe i was being impatient!

It used to be software catalog (web page) for user targeted installs. Though can appear in software center. Computer targeted deployments in software center. The new center has both though I don't think the setting works very well if you still have the settings for the software catalog being pushed out. Also I think its windows 10 only.

The reason it is taking so long for the software to appear is SCCM runs a check in cycle and that downloads the headers for the software in the available collection, this can be a little frustrating when you are testing the system, you can manually check you system back into SCCM to get the catalog quicker but it does not always work.

 

As a side note, when was the SCCM set up and install done? was it done by someone who knew what they where doing with System Center ? If not I would look at starting again with it or paying for a Microsoft Partner or consultant to do it, something I have seen in the past at several educational establishments is really badly done SCCM installs which function but when put into production use fall over causing more work than you want. I am more than happy to give you some guidance if your not sure how good the set up is as its part of my bread and butter these days.

It's slow by design as if every single thing you did got pushed out immediately there's a chance it could swamp your network with too much traffic!

 

I think by default every 1 hour the SCCM client contacts the server to see what's going on and implement any changes like you adding any new software to the Software Center. If you're testing it and can't be bothered to wait that long then simply open up the Configuration Manager applet in Control Panel, click on the Actions tab and run the appropriate actions to manually update (I cant remember which ones need to be run and what order you need to do them so I run them all twice in order and that seems to work) just wait a minute or so for the actions to run and then open up the Sofware Center and then if you've added the software correctly it will appear and you can test it!

Machine Policy Cycle and Application deployment Cycle. You can get right click tools to do this to remote PCs.

I set up a new clients collection that populates with devices newer that 24 hours and deploy a crazy client policy that does evals every 15 mins to speed up new installs. After that it's just let it do its thing. If you want to speed anything up just force a machine policy update on a collection.
