Folder Redirection fail

Hi folks, I'm having some trouble with pupil user home folders and group policy folder redirection - can anyone help me?

 

We had a catastrophic server failure a couple of months ago, and things needed rebuilding; luckily almost all the files remained intact, including the pupil user home folders.

 

However, now when a pupil logs in and tries to open their H:\ drive, they get an error `H:\ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network... etc'

 

I've checked permissions and sharing permissions, and as far as I can tell, they are correct. Not only is the user not able to open H: as it appears in Windows explorer, but the folder redirection for `My Documents' doesn't work either. Anyone seen this before?

Have you tried giving explicit permissions and manually mapping the folder? How about creating a new user in the same OU (Good old Stew Dent or Pugh Pill) - does it work then? It sounds like a permissions issue and those are 2 relatively simple ways to check

I've tried giving explicit permissions to the group `pupils' (which includes all pupil users). Despite the fact that pupils have full control of the shared folder under which sits all their home directories (and this has propagated to their individual home folders), they still can't access H:\ - for some reason, nor can they browse to it by typing \\oa-mk-dc01\pupil users\

I've noticed that the share shows up as [Offline Share] when you hover the mouse over it...

It seems to be something on the laptops themselves - when I log in on a desktop PC it works just fine... Maybe something to do with offline files?

Do you use SCCM?

 

Folder Redirection group policy is not applied in Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 « KB3060058

 

Computers running Windows 8 and later versions may not apply Folder Redirection Group Policy objects (GPOs) as expected. This issue can occur if the computers are domain clients and are managed by Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Service Pack 1 (ConfigMgr 2012 SP1) or later.

It is something I've had to adjust on the laptops themselves! For some reason, the offline files group policy I set up just wasn't working, so I had to turn off offline files manually, and after deleting old profiles on the laptops (thanks delprof2!), this seems to be working OK now...

By the way, these laptops are Windows 7 64 bit, and I'm not running SCCM although I would like to!
