Can I do a Microsoft CHKDSK on a MacBook HDD

Suspect disk corruption on a MacBook Pro

 

Can I plug the HDD in via USB to a Windows machine and do CHKDSK

 

I also have an iPad

 

The Macbook will not boot - Apple logo comes up - line goes across - then repeats again and again

 

Tried holding ALT on startup - The symbol of the HDD comes up but NOT the RECOVERY Section icon

I don't know if chkdsk would help you there, as Windows doesn't natively support the mac HFS filing system.

 

As the computer restarts, hold down the Command (⌘) – Option (⌥) – R combination and see if that lets you go into the recovery section so you can access disk utility then

Your Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro would have come with 10.6.6, but it can run any version of OS X from that version to the latest (10.11.5). Did you upgrade to El Capitan?

Do you still have the installation media that came with the MacBook? If so, you can boot from that and run Disk Utility to check for errors

If you have access to another Mac (and a spare 8GB+ USB flash drive that can be erased) you can can download the OS X installer for free from the Mac App store...

To create the bootable USB installer use the 'createinstallmedia' command from Terminal, Install Disk Creator or DiskMaker X.

 

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/[color="#FF0000"]Untitled[/color] --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

 

Note. 'Untitled' is the name of the USB flash drive you wish to create the bootable installer on.

You can also run Disk Utility from it (it's in the menu at the top).

The Option (Alt) key. Then select the USB drive.

Preform a verbose boot [Command + V] and it will run a hfs check. If that fails. run recovery from the web [Command - Option - R] and it will boot into Recovery where you can preform error checks or reinstall iOS then rebind the mac to AD and allow user to log in.

Yeah - Command+Option(ALT)+R got me into downloading stuff. It froze on typing a password for the WiFi on more than one occasion, so I chose a signal with no password and it succeeded.
