Converting old Gmail Business to Educational/Classroom account

I manage a public charter school in California, and when our school was set up many moons ago we were put on one of the free Google business accounts which supported something like 100 users. Since then they've rolled out the educational/classroom setup which based on my daughter's experience with it (at a different school) it looks great. I had been putting off dealing with this until summer but we're running out of space so now it's becoming a little more urgent.

 

My questions:

 

1. How do I convert our account from one type to another?

 

2. What can go wrong?

I'm wondering if I should set up a new domain so I can set up all this ahead of time, including LDAP sync with my Mac Server's OpenDirectory...
