Access to file:///C:/ in Google Chrome

Discovered students can access this in Chrome, The C drive is restricted in GP - they can't access it in Explorer whatsoever

 

File Server Resource Manager policies restricts them saving pretty much anything except Office and Multimedia files, so they can't do anything except for look at all the folders - it's just indexes the C drive, but would like to hide this in Chrome if possible

 

I've tried the "Block access to a list of URLs" GPO with "file:///c:/" and "c:/" but doesn't work

 

Any ideas?

Hi Dave, thanks for your reply - I have the ADMX templates for Chrome already, I've had a good look - I'm struggling to find the UNC setting?

Have you also restricted C:\ for students in group policy ?

I've set this in the same way as you (i.e just Block access to C:\) and it works OK - if they try to browse to c: it changes it to file:///c:\ and tells you its blocked.

 

Have you got anything in the whitelist (Allow Urls) that might be overriding this?

Yes it's all restricted, they get the resource is disallowed in Windows Explorer

 

The worst thing they can do is look at the contents, they can't download anything like .dll, .exe, .msi - that's all restricted via polices we already have in place in File Server Resource Manager - but ideally we want to hide this in Chrome too

Ha, the block URL GPO has worked now, strange! Thanks for the replies guys.

 

*c:/* seemed to work rather just c:/
